Wildlife & Safari Explorer — 8 Days

Four parks in eight days: leopards at Yala, elephants at Udawalawe and Minneriya, and the quiet, leopard-rich scrub of Wilpattu. Built with early starts and good guides.

Trip highlights

  • Wilpattu — the largest and least visited park, with genuinely wild leopard sightings
  • The Minneriya or Kaudulla Gathering, the largest seasonal congregation of Asian elephants on earth
  • Udawalawe, where elephants are close to guaranteed and the light at 6am is extraordinary
  • Two safaris in Yala Block 1, giving you a real chance rather than a single roll of the dice
  • The Elephant Transit Home at Udawalawe, an ethical alternative to elephant rides
  • Over 200 bird species realistically possible, including 20 of the 34 endemics

Sri Lanka is the best place in Asia to see a wild leopard, and one of the few places on earth where you can watch elephants, leopards, sloth bears and blue whales in a single week. The catch is that most safari itineraries give you one drive in one park and hope for the best.

This one does not. Five game drives across four parks, at the right times of day, with drivers who know the individual animals rather than just the roads.

How we choose the parks

Wilpattu for wildness and space — it is nearly three times the size of Yala with a fraction of the jeeps. Minneriya or Kaudulla for the elephant Gathering, strongest from July to September. Udawalawe for reliability, because it is the one park where you will almost certainly see elephants close up. And Yala for the leopards, twice, because once is a gamble.

A word on jeep etiquette

Yala can get crowded, and crowding stresses the animals. Our drivers do not radio-chase sightings or block a leopard’s path, and we will happily drive away from a scrum of twelve jeeps to find something quieter. It makes for better photographs anyway.

Day by day

Your itinerary

This is a starting point. Every day can be swapped, slowed down or extended — just tell us what you would rather do.

1 Arrival, north to Wilpattu

Straight from the airport to the edge of the island's largest park — about three hours. Evening briefing with your naturalist.

Overnight: Wilpattu

2 Full-day safari at Wilpattu

A whole day in the park with a packed lunch. Wilpattu is villu country — natural sand-rimmed lakes — and the leopards here are shy, wild and unforgettable when they appear.

Overnight: Wilpattu

3 To the Cultural Triangle

A morning drive east. Afternoon safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla depending on where the herds are that week — your guide checks with the rangers, not a schedule.

Overnight: Sigiriya

4 Sigiriya or Pidurangala, then birdwatching

A cultural morning if you want one, then the Sigiriya wetlands in the late afternoon, which are superb for storks, eagles and bee-eaters.

Overnight: Sigiriya

5 South through the hills to Udawalawe

A long but beautiful drive. Arrive in time for the 5pm feeding at the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are rehabilitated and released.

Overnight: Udawalawe

6 Udawalawe at dawn, transfer to Yala

Elephants at first light, then a short hop east to Yala. Afternoon rest before an early night.

Overnight: Yala

7 Two safaris at Yala

A dawn drive and an afternoon drive in Block 1. Between them: sleep, eat and watch the peacocks from the pool.

Overnight: Yala

8 A final morning, then departure

One more sunrise safari if you want it, or a slow start and the coastal road back to Colombo.

Overnight: Departure

Questions

About this tour

What are my actual chances of seeing a leopard?

In Yala Block 1, roughly 40 to 60 per cent on a single game drive, and well over 80 per cent across three drives — which is why this itinerary includes several. Nobody honest will promise you a leopard.

When is Yala closed?

Block 1 usually closes for around a month from early September for maintenance, though the dates shift. If your trip falls in that window we move you to Block 5, Lunugamvehera or Wilpattu, and we will tell you before you book.

Do you offer elephant rides?

No. We do not work with any venue that offers elephant riding or bathing with chained elephants. Udawalawe's Elephant Transit Home and wild sightings in the parks are the ethical alternatives, and honestly the better experience.
