Sri Lanka Family Adventure — 12 Days

Sri Lanka is one of the easiest tropical countries to travel with children — short distances, warm people, good hospitals in the main towns and food that even fussy eaters will find something in. The thing that spoils family trips here is the driving, so this itinerary is built around keeping every transfer under three hours and putting two or three nights in each place.
What children actually remember
Not the temples. The train with the doors open, the elephant that walked past the jeep, the tuk-tuk ride, the hoppers they learned to make, and the turtle they released at dusk. We have weighted the trip accordingly, while leaving the grown-up sights in for the adults.
Practical things worth knowing
Bring high-factor sun cream and repellent from home — local stock is expensive and limited. Most hotels will do a plain rice or pasta on request without being asked twice. And dengue is present year-round, so long sleeves at dawn and dusk are a sensible habit rather than a scare.

1 Arrive, stay near the airport
Negombo, twenty minutes away. Pool, dinner, sleep — the flight is enough for one day.

2 North to Sigiriya
Three and a half hours broken by stops. Afternoon swimming.

3 The rock, or the village
Sigiriya suits confident climbers from about eight upwards. Younger families do the village experience instead — bullock cart, catamaran, cooking, and a lot of laughing.

4 Elephants and cave temples
Dambulla in the morning, an afternoon safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla.

5 To Kandy
A short drive, a spice garden, and the lake. The Temple of the Tooth in the evening if the children are up for it.

6 Kandy day
Botanical gardens — vast lawns, a suspension bridge and a giant fig tree that children climb under for an hour.

7 Up to the tea country
The scenic drive, a tea factory and a very cold night in Nuwara Eliya. Bring warm clothes.

8 The train to Ella
Four hours with the doors open and everybody hanging out of the windows. The high point of the trip for most children.

Nine Arch Bridge, Ravana Falls and a swim in a river pool.

10 Down to Udawalawe
An afternoon safari — this is the park where you are all but certain to see elephants, which matters when there are children in the jeep.

West or south depending on the season, with a stop at the Kosgoda turtle hatchery.

12 Beach, then home
A last full day of swimming before the transfer to the airport.

About this tour
Is Sri Lanka good for young children?
Very. Sri Lankans adore children and staff will make a fuss of yours everywhere you go. The practical issues are heat, mosquitoes and long drives — all of which this itinerary is designed around.
Do you provide car seats?
Yes, at no extra charge — just tell us the ages. Sri Lankan hire cars do not come with them as standard, so this is worth asking any operator.
Which beaches are safe for swimming?
From November to April, Unawatuna, Bentota and Tangalle's sheltered coves. From May to September, Trincomalee and Pasikuda on the east coast. Ask before you swim anywhere else — the rip currents on this island are serious and there are very few lifeguards.
