Grand Tour of Sri Lanka — 14 Days

Two weeks, coast to coast: the ancient cities, Kandy, the tea hills, two national parks, the whale coast and Galle, at a pace that lets you breathe.

Trip highlights

  • Anuradhapura by bicycle at dawn — the Sri Maha Bodhi is the oldest recorded planted tree on earth
  • Sigiriya Rock and, on the quiet side, the climb up Pidurangala for the better view of it
  • Polonnaruwa's Gal Vihara Buddhas carved from a single granite face
  • Two full days in Kandy rather than the usual rushed afternoon
  • Horton Plains and World's End, walked before the mist rolls in at 9.30am
  • Two different national parks — leopards at Yala, elephant herds at Udawalawe
  • Blue whales off Mirissa in season, and the Handunugoda tea estate on the way back

Fourteen days is when Sri Lanka stops being a series of sights and starts being a place. You get two nights almost everywhere, which means unhurried mornings, proper conversations with your guide, and the freedom to abandon the plan when something better turns up.

What the extra days buy you

Anuradhapura, which most ten-day trips skip and which is the single most atmospheric place in the country at dawn. A second national park, so you are not relying on one safari for your wildlife. Horton Plains, which needs an early start and a spare morning. And two nights in Kandy instead of one, which changes it from a temple visit into a town you actually get to know.

Best time to travel this route

December to March is the strongest window: the south and west coasts are in their dry season, the hill country is clear, and Yala is at its best before the March closure period. April is warm and lovely but busy around the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. From May onwards we would rework the coastal section towards the east.

Day by day

Your itinerary

This is a starting point. Every day can be swapped, slowed down or extended — just tell us what you would rather do.

1 Arrive, overnight near the airport

A short transfer to Negombo so you can sleep, swim and eat crab curry before the driving starts.

Overnight: Negombo

2 North to Anuradhapura

The first of the ancient capitals. Afternoon at the Isurumuniya rock temple and the great dagobas at sunset, when the white brick turns pink.

Overnight: Anuradhapura

3 Anuradhapura by bicycle, then Sigiriya

Cycle the sacred city early — it is huge and flat and the light is best before nine. Afternoon transfer to Sigiriya.

Overnight: Sigiriya

4 Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala

The rock at opening time. In the late afternoon we climb Pidurangala opposite, which is where the photograph of Sigiriya actually comes from.

Overnight: Sigiriya

5 Polonnaruwa and Minneriya

Medieval Sri Lanka in the morning, elephants in the afternoon. Between July and September the Gathering at Minneriya can bring 200 elephants to one tank.

Overnight: Sigiriya

6 Dambulla, spice gardens and Kandy

Cave temples first thing, then the road south through Matale to Kandy.

Overnight: Kandy

7 A full day in Kandy

Botanical gardens, the Udawattakele forest reserve above the town, the market, and the evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth.

Overnight: Kandy

8 Up to Nuwara Eliya

Ramboda Falls, a tea factory tour and tasting, then the cool air of the hill station. Afternoon walk around Gregory Lake.

Overnight: Nuwara Eliya

9 Horton Plains and World's End

A 5am start to reach the plateau before the cloud arrives. The nine-kilometre loop takes around three hours and is genuinely one of the best walks in the country.

Overnight: Nuwara Eliya

10 The train to Ella

Reserved seats on the celebrated stretch. Afternoon free in Ella.

Overnight: Ella

11 Ella at your own pace

Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arch Bridge, Ravana Falls, or a cooking class. Nothing is compulsory.

Overnight: Ella

12 Safari country

Down to the dry zone. Afternoon safari at Udawalawe, which has the most reliable elephant sightings on the island.

Overnight: Udawalawe or Yala

13 Yala at dawn, then the coast

First jeeps through the gate for the best leopard chances, then west to the beach.

Overnight: Mirissa

14 Whales, Galle and departure

An optional early boat to look for blue whales, a morning inside Galle Fort, and the expressway home.

Overnight: Departure

Questions

About this tour

Is two weeks too long in Sri Lanka?

No. The island is small but the roads are slow, and two weeks is what turns a checklist into a holiday. Most travellers who do ten days tell us afterwards they wish they had done fourteen.

Could we add the east coast or Jaffna?

With sixteen to eighteen days, yes. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are excellent from May to September, which is exactly when the south is wet — so the seasons work in your favour.
