Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Kandy — five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in five days, with an archaeologist's eye rather than a checklist.
Trip highlights
Sri Lanka has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This trip visits five of them, and the distances between them are short enough that you spend your days looking at 2,000-year-old cities rather than sitting in a car.
Anuradhapura in particular rewards explanation. Without it, it is a series of large brick domes in the heat. With a good guide, it is the story of a civilisation that built reservoirs still in use today and kept a written chronicle for 2,300 years. Our guides are licensed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, and for this route we use guides who specialise in the archaeology.
An afternoon safari at Minneriya slots neatly into day three. A Sigiriya village lunch — bullock cart, catamaran across the tank, rice and curry cooked over a wood fire — is touristy but genuinely good. And if you have a spare day, Ritigala’s forest monastery ruins are the quietest, strangest place in the Cultural Triangle.

Questions
Sigiriya is around 1,200 steps with handrails and shade at intervals — most reasonably mobile people manage it in 45 minutes. The rest is flat walking and cycling. If stairs are a problem, Pidurangala is not easier, but Dambulla and Polonnaruwa are perfectly accessible.
Yes. Shoulders and knees covered at all Buddhist sites, and shoes off at temple entrances. Carry socks — the stone gets very hot by 10am. Never pose with your back to a Buddha statue; it causes real offence and has landed tourists in trouble.
