Southern Beaches & Whale Watching — 7 Days

Blue whales off Mirissa, turtles at Rekawa, the ramparts of Galle and a week of very good beaches — with just enough to do between swims.

Trip highlights

  • Blue whales and sperm whales off Mirissa — the continental shelf is unusually close to shore here
  • Galle Fort's ramparts at sunset and its Dutch colonial streets in the morning
  • Green turtles coming ashore to nest at Rekawa, watched under red light with a conservation ranger
  • Stilt fishermen at Koggala, if you want the photograph, explained honestly
  • A first surf lesson at Weligama, on the gentlest beach break in the country
  • Handunugoda estate's virgin white tea, picked without human hands touching the leaf

Sri Lanka’s south coast is where most trips end, and where a fair number should probably just begin and stay. Between Galle and Tangalle there are around 80 kilometres of beach, a walled Dutch city, the best whale watching in the Indian Ocean and some of the most enjoyable food on the island.

The whales

The continental shelf drops off unusually close to shore near Dondra Head, which puts deep water — and the world’s largest animal — within an hour of Mirissa harbour. Blue whales are resident in the season rather than migratory here, which is why sighting rates are so high. Sperm whales, spinner dolphins and the occasional orca turn up too.

Getting the season right

This trip only works between November and April. Outside that window the monsoon makes the sea rough and the boats stop running, and we would steer you to Trincomalee or Arugam Bay on the east coast, where the seasons are exactly reversed.

1 Airport to the south coast

The expressway makes this quick — around two and a half hours to Unawatuna. Swim, eat, sleep.

2 Galle Fort

Inside the walls on foot: the lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church, the ramparts, and lunch in a courtyard. Afternoon back on the beach.

Overnight: Unawatuna

3 Koggala, Handunugoda and Mirissa

A slow coastal morning — the lake, the stilt fishermen, the tea estate — then transfer to Mirissa.

Overnight: Mirissa

4 Whale watching at dawn

Out at 6am. Blue whales are sighted on most days between December and March. Back by 11am for a long lunch and an afternoon doing nothing.

Overnight: Mirissa

5 East to Tangalle

Quieter, wilder beaches. Afternoon at Hiriketiya or Goyambokka. At night, the Rekawa turtle watch.

Overnight: Tangalle

6 Mulkirigala and the beach

An optional morning climb to the rock monastery at Mulkirigala — 500 steps, no crowds, extraordinary views — then the rest of the day is yours.

Overnight: Tangalle

7 Departure

A final swim, then the coastal road and expressway to the airport.

Questions

About this tour

When can I see blue whales in Sri Lanka?

From Mirissa, the season runs roughly November to April, with December to March the most reliable. Sightings are common but never guaranteed, and the sea is calmest early in the morning.

Which whale-watching operators do you use?

Only ones that keep the legal 100-metre distance, limit boat numbers around an animal and do not chase. It sometimes means a slightly longer wait for a sighting. We think that is the right trade.

Is the south coast good for swimming?

From November to April, yes — calm, warm and clear. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rough surf and rip currents; that is when we would send you to the east coast instead.
